Windstorm Strikes Utica Causes Trees and Crops Damage

A small tornado hit Utica on Sunday afternoon amid thunderstorms in Frederick city. Trees were broken or blown over, vegetables and onions damaged, and power lines affected. Hail marble size lasted about five minutes. Six phones out in Utica, minor county damage, crews repairing into night. May rainfall increased by .14 inches.

Death Is Winner Portage Bay Teen Dies in Russian Roulette

Nineteen year old Burton Bay of Seattle attempted suicide ten times, thrice pulling a pistol on himself with one shell in the chamber. The gun fired on the third try, hitting his right temple. He died in a hospital in Port Angeles, where he and two companions played Russian Roulette at Blue Mountain during a visit to Bay's parents.

Sewer System Ready For Connections In Villa Estates

The northwest annexed sewer system, added by the city in 1947, is ready for use and Villa Estates residents may connect. The system serves Lee Place, Grant Street, West Fourth Street, Wilson Place, part of West Seventh Street, and Military Road. Permits from the plumbing inspector are required and a plumber must make the connection. City officials urge prompt compliance with a 60 day deadline after notice.

Local Civitan Attendance Record Set at Washington Convention

The Frederick Civitan Club won the district attendance record for the second straight quarter and returned with the trophy from a two day convention at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington. International President James R. Richardson and past president Joseph P. Bailey spoke. Richardson formally chartered the Hagerstown Club, sponsored by Frederick. Yokley Charged In Gaithersburg Murder

Montgomery County Police say Clifton Yokley a 30 year old landscaper has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of his brother in law James Pete Lowe 26. Lowe's body was found after police responded to a family dispute in a field near Yokley's home yesterday. Yokley admitted the stabbing claiming self defense.

Keller May Go On Disabled List Soon

Frederick County outfielder Charlie Keller of the New York Yankees may be placed on the disabled list after opening day due to a side injury. Reports say a 60 day rest could be given by May 19 to complete roster requirements. Keller recently visited his hometown en route to New York from the West.

Hood College riding club drill team showcased precision group riding at the annual Hood College Horse Show despite rain and mud. Maryland Abolishes Declaration of Intention for Voter Registration

The state ends the long standing declaration of intention rule effective June 1, requiring only a registrant oath of bona fide residence to enroll on the voter list unless challenged. In Frederick, election officials will not demand proof of residence unless the oath is contested. General registration returns for 1950 will open in spring, with about 28 000 voters currently registered across Frederick County's 60 precincts.

Fire extinguisher battle at Linden Hills Diner car seat

Firemen were summoned to Linden Hills Diner at about 4 am to extinguish a blaze in the front seat of a parked automobile. Some upholstery burned and a booster stream was used. The car’s operator was not found.

Lidie Will Stand Trial For Grand Larceny

Maryland man Calvin Lidice Jr. who served seven of eight months for grand larceny will be discharged May 30 and be brought to Frederick County to face new charges of grand larceny and receiving stolen goods. He was involved in stealing four automobile batteries from Norman W. Etzler plant on East Patrick Street in August and related thefts last fall. Three co defendants received suspended sentences in December.

Communists Win Elections Across Hungary Bulgaria and Germany

The Associated Press reports that Communists swept elections in Hungary, Bulgaria, and East Germany with preselected slates and high turnout. Hungary showed 97.3 percent support for the government, while Sofia claimed near universal support and Germany offered a yes or no vote on a government-aligned slate. Open voting and curtained booths suggested pressure on dissenters.

Cars Damaged In Accidents On Route 32 and Emmitsburg Streets

A Sunday night crash in Emmitsburg left S Sgt Joseph Ambrose Weishaar 28 of Fairfield with a damaged Kaiser after colliding with an iron hitching post and fence. A second collision two miles north of Lewistown harmed two cars. no charges. Hit and Run Driver Not Apprehended Near Point of Rocks

State Police searched across a wide area from Barracks B for a driver who struck 26 year old Frank Wiles near Point of Rocks at about 11 p m Sunday. Wiles suffered multiple fractures and head injuries and was moved to Frederick Memorial Hospital then to Newton D Baker Hospital in Tartinsburg West Virginia. The injured man is a veteran. Plane developed that can land on a tennis court field

Boston May 16 A small slow flying helioplane was unveiled by MIT professor Otto O Koppen and Harvard instructor Lynn Bollinger. The two year project features a two passenger high wing monoplane with a large two bladed propeller and 45 horsepower engine. It can fly as slow as 27 mph and descend at a gentle rate.
