Train collision in Tamil Nadu kills 43 near Salem

An express train collided with a freight train near Salem, 150 miles southwest of Madras, killing at least 43 and injuring more than 40 as the first three cars of the passenger train were destroyed. A faulty signal caused the crash, police said.

Father kills son and himself after surname ruling

An unwed father Alan Gubernat, 33, shot and killed his son Scott in his Williams Township home three days after losing a New Jersey court fight over the boy's last name. He then shot himself. The case follows New Jersey Supreme Court's ruling granting custody to the mother and allowing her to determine the surname.
