Entomologist Doug Miller of Beltsville explains that 17 year cicadas live underground for 17 years and will reemerge in 1996 in Brood Number Two near Frederick County while a larger Big Brood from New York to North Carolina won’t surface again until 2004. He notes limited impact on trees, some egg-laying damage, and odd culinary interest among researchers and Native tribes.
