V E Day observances amid rain in Frederick area
V E Day came to Frederick with sirens horns and church bells but rain dampened celebrations and streets emptied after factories stores and offices closed. Vinson scheduled a news conference to announce homefront policies for the war with Japan. A patriotic assembly was held at Frederick High School with Dr James B Ranck of Hood College giving the address. Similar observances took place in the county. A year after Mount Airy extended sewer lines to schools, septic overflow became a major health issue. Father Edward V Echle said church renovations will echo the original design of the 138 year old St John the Evangelist, the oldest Catholic church in the area and likely the country.
