Nelson Mandela was elected the country's first black president unopposed as multiracial parliament opened in Cape Town. He addressed cheering crowds from City Hall balcony promising a new era of citizenship for all and reflecting on the nation’s tortured history.
Frederick officials push to attract developers and residents as Carroll Creek work advances. By summer dirt will cover Bentztowne Spring area and by August grass will grow. Gov building slated for 1995 completion, with Delaplaine Arts Center and bridge mural progressing.
The Clinton administration outlined a policy to let Haitian boat refugees seek asylum at sea while promising no large influx to Florida. It tightens sanctions on Haiti's military rulers and names former Rep. William Gray as Haiti advisor. Most economic refugees will be returned, with safeguards for those who fear for their lives. Florida Governor Chiles warned against waves of arrivals despite the plan.
Bob and Terri Hudak welcomed their first child, a six pound girl named Taylor Marie, born at 5 08 am Sunday at Frederick Memorial Hospital after labor began Saturday afternoon. Terri, 27, hoped the baby would arrive on Sunday and recalled waiting through the day before labor began.
Genstar Co workers were told to return to work by Tuesday or lose their jobs, but the United Steelworkers union met Sunday and decided to continue the two week strike. Bernard Parrish said the plan remains not to return at this time. Plant manager John Ketterman declined comment.
About 25 Lehigh Portland Cement Co workers picketed the plant and the manager’s home in Union Bridge to publicize stalled contract talks. Union leader Jim Harris cited 1991 representation changes, lack of pay raises since 1984, pension concerns, and recent hazardous material incidents including a November 1992 hydrogen exposure sending six workers to hospital.
The Frederick News Post reports the Baltimore Orioles win while the Frederick Keys lose a twin bill. Page C-1 notes the paper is printed on 100 percent recycled stock and is recyclable.

She led Hood for 20 years as the first woman and youngest president, noting risk taking and uncertainty shaped her leadership.
