A coalition spanning 20 years aims to list the 17 000 acre Sugarloaf area in Frederick and Montgomery counties on the National Register of Historic Places. The nomination would unlock state and federal tax benefits for owners and recognize the district’s agricultural, manufacturing and transportation heritage including iron furnaces, glass plants, rail and river transportation.

New Market firefighter among six honored as fallen heroes
