Officials note 18 deaths since last year with most swimmers not wearing PFDs. program offers PFDs with citations for missing equipment and adds color coded river safety poles and new regulations for under 16 foot boats. Boating classes funded by DNR and Frederick County Parks begin May 9 at Fountain Rock Park with limited seats and pre registration.
Dr. Samuel Dennis, assistant sociology professor and the college's only African-American male professor, taught his last class Friday after being denied renewal for 1990-91. He claims institutional racism drove the decision, noting he is the first African-American male professor of rank in 200 years.
A Smithsonian exhibit opening in Washington credits Monrovia resident John Atanasoff as the builder of the first digital computer. The display forms part of the Information Age exhibit, which highlights the development of information technology including phones and facsimiles. The recognition ends a long dispute dating to 1939 when Atanasoff, a retired physicist, created a desk size device.
Frank McDonough and Don Fisher lead the Frederick County Pigeon Racing Club of eight members. Their homing birds are trucked hundreds of miles for tests of return speed, with a hobby rooted in childhood and a second-floor loft devoted to care and feeding.
