Bottle message returns after 16 years across the sea

Latvia Seeks New Currency to Back Independence Move

Latvia plans a prewar Latvian currency the fat to restore exchange abroad. The Latvia Fund will issue bonds and lottery tickets to raise 11 million dollars to finance currency creation. Lawmakers voted 138 to 0 for independence and dropped "Soviet Socialist" from the republic's name.

New radio station WAFY begins broadcasting in Frederick County

Barbara Marmet endured FCC hearings and multiple site rejections since 1980 to place a 103.5 FM station in Braddock Heights. After years of appeals and public objections, the tower height was limited to 200 feet and WAFY will start at 12:01 a.m. on Monday May 7 from a storefront studio near Braddock Heights Post Office.

Brigadoon Resident Wins Maryland You Are Beautiful Essay

Anita Deifilia Amalia Jones, a 63 year old former Ecuadorian and longtime Frederick resident, won the third annual Maryland You Are Beautiful Senior Citizens Creative Writing contest with an essay linking Maryland to heaven. The contest, themed Maryland Yesterday Today and Tomorrow, drew nine contestants statewide with 23 winners across Maryland. Jones, residing on Charles Street, recounts tales of Maryland from her mother and notes her father’s Ecuadorian roots while describing her move to the United States at 16 and finding Maryland near heaven.
