Progress on the Fishing Creek storage reservoir continues with an average of 40 men employed daily. The 11.57 acre pond will supply water to the city and help prevent past shortages, while a 260 foot tunnel aids dam cleaning and pipeline placement. Completion aimed for July 31, but timing remains uncertain.
Emory L B Coblentz will continue as State Director of Welfare for at least two more months, serving until July 1 with potential extension. Governor Ritchie noted the difficulty in finding a successor amid rumors linking Carville D Benson or George W Rife, while a woman candidate like Mrs William J Brown was not ruled out. The Welfare Board remains the sole paid member, with a $4.00 salary and oversight of the Penitentiary and House of Correction.
May Fete will be held Saturday May 10 at Hood College with events from 9:30 a.m. rope jumping and songs in front of Coblentz steps to a 3:20 p.m. pageant on Brodbeck lawn. The program features the May Queen and Prince Hood with courtiers in a formal procession and a festive campus display.

Alfred Smith colored, jailed 20 days and 30 days more on a $25 fine by Justice Motter. He was released on a suspended three month sentence with weekly $7 restitution, then rearrested for drunken disorderly conduct and given 60 days in jail but freed again on a suspended term with six month risk of revival if arrested. Smith now owes $240? in fines and back dues while under supervision.
Edward Jackson Secretary of State widened his lead in the Indiana Republican gubernatorial race as 2042 of 2469 precincts reported. Jackson stood at TM.584 with 42,524 votes, Shank 12,898, Tower 4,195, Push 4,630, and Dulberger 1,921.
The 844 to 13 vote by the Methodist Episcopal general conference in Springfield Mass ratifies unification with the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The decision received enthusiastic response from Southern church leaders in Nashville Tenn as bishops and delegates await final communication and a possible special session call.
David C. Winebrenner III, Democratic nominee for Representative in Congress from Maryland's Sixth District, thanks supporters after a commanding primary win. He praises Frederick County loyalty and energy and pledges vigorous effort in the November campaign with continued home collaboration.
The Mount Pleasant Congregational Church in Washington hosts the Goadies annual event with Frederick visitors Miss Mary Filler soprano Mrs Ignatius Bierlee violinist and Miss Virginia Carty pianist from Hood College. A special meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen is set for 7 pm at City Hall to read and pass an ordinance on property assessments along North Market Street as part of the street improvement program. Other minor matters are expected to be discussed but not disclosed.
Delegates descend on Frederick for the annual Women's Home Missionary Society of Frederick District convention at Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church. Mrs Richard Estep presides with Rev G Elis Williams in charge as about 10 delegates attend the opening session at 7 46 p m tonight. Baltimore's Mrs John Lowe and Mobray of Tingertown to speak with special music by the Calvary choir and solo by Mrs Charles Hudson. Business sessions follow Thursday.
A national forecast predicts showers late tonight or Thursday bringing relief to Fredericksiana after a heat wave. Tuesday tied the warmest May day since 1919 with a high around 93.4 degrees, and overnight dropped to 58 degrees beside an early morning thunderstorm.
The Bureau of Mines and the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers studied miners conditions in Pittsburgh. The experiment found fat men lost more weight in heat but felt less exhausted when relieved, noting the body cannot endure 90F with 100 percent humidity. Pulse rate, not body temperature, drove discomfort, with symptoms appearing around a 139 pulse and severe signs near 140. the peak rate reached 184.
President Coolidge said the immigration bill turning Japanese exclusion into law on July 1 would be debated on the Senate and House floors. He criticized the July 1 date as too soon for diplomatic talks with Japan and moved to rally opposition to the conference report. He favored March 1, 1926, as the effective date.
Former House Speaker Joseph G. Cannon, aged 88, marked his anniversary at home with family. His daughter Helen returned from Europe as a highlight, and a small group of friends planned evening carding. Cannon maintains good health and routine, with daily drives and social chats, receiving many congratulatory telegrams including one from President Coolidge.
From 4482 of 6974 precincts in California Coolidge held a lead of 11702 votes over Johnson with 216081 to 198316. McAdoo delegates favored by Democrats stood at 54529 to 13281 among uninstructed candidates.
Charles Daly, about 28, colored, charged with receiving stolen goods, held for grand jury after a hearing before Justice Motter. Farnest Brown, about 26, colored, charged with larceny, dismissed for lack of evidence. They were linked to a theft of bed linen and towels from the Francis Scott Key Hotel. Daly admitted cutting the hotel name from material and claimed he bought it from Brown. The hotel manager reported the theft to Sheriff Albaugh. Brown represented by Alton Y Bennett and Daly by St Dorsey Etchison.
Governor Pinchot convened Pennsylvania city leaders to discuss law enforcement and liquor traffic. More than half the cities including Pittsburgh and Philadelphia did not send representatives, while others proposed cooperation such as intercity detective exchanges to prevent liquor violations.
In New York on May 7 initial hourages in Industrials showed irregular trend yet steadiness in speculative favorites spurred a rise in stock listings. Copper shares and major names like Western Pacific Northwestern Canadian Pacific and Nashville led gains as the market moved higher. Money opened at 21s per cent with a closing irregular and total shares traded near 100000.
Ten week old Corning Modell was recovered after a Monday kidnapping in front of the home. Mrs. Mary Demarco confessed to taking the infant to fool her husband. she and her husband were arrested. Police traced the baby to a home about a mile from the Modell residence at 60th and Market.
In Montgomery county five towns chose mayors and council members. Rockville elected Charles G. Holland mayor with 195 votes. council picks included Joseph L. Clagett and others. Gaithersburg named Wilbur S Day mayor, Poolesville council elected five, Glen Echo re-elected Joseph J. Decker as mayor by one vote, with Buckingham and Bogus winning council seats.
Frederick Lodge of the B P O Elks will initiate a class of 12 members and perform degree work followed by a social session with Blue Melody Bars. District Deputy Meredith Staub will host a 6 p m dinner for Maryland Delaware and District of Columbia officials at the Francis Scott Key Hotel before the 7 p m monthly meeting.
