Lightning Sets Fire to Baker Barn. Dog Rescues Livestock
A Frederick County barn owned by Edward J. Baker near Kemptown was struck by lightning during a storm, destroying the structure and contents valued over 4000 dollars. The quick actions of Baker and a large collie saved 10 horses, 12 cattle and 60 sheep, while 300 bushels wheat 10 tons hay 800 sticks of tobacco and farming implements were lost. A separate strike hit John Clark’s Monrovia-area barn where a bird nest caused the damage but no major fire. Residents call the storm one of the area’s severest in years.
