National Hunting and Fishing Day Proclaimed by President
President Nixon designated September 23 as National Hunting and Fishing Day with a proclamation. The move honors about 50 million Americans who hunt or fish and follows a Senate resolution led by Thomas J. McIntyre and others and House action by Robert Sikes. Interior Secretary Rogers Morton notes sportsmen’s support through licenses, excise taxes, and contributions fund wildlife and habitat programs, while license sales last year topped 208 million dollars, up 16 million from the prior year.
