Robbery and Fire Send Search for Inmate

Authorities launch a wide search for William Ambrose, a 24 year old escapee from Rosewood Training School, after a 12 room farmhouse near Dickerson was robbed and set on fire. Ambrose, last seen near Dickerson and Furnace Ford Bridge, is described as armed and dangerous with a pistol and rifle, wearing Grimes clothes, with light hair and a near blind left eye.

Senate approves 300 million school aid bill

The Senate passed a bill authorizing Federal grants of 300 million dollars yearly to help states pay teachers salaries and operating costs. Passage was 58 to 15 after defeating major amendments. States would decide funding recipients with allotments of 5 to 29 dollars per pupil. poorer states receive more. The measure, backed by a bipartisan group of 15 senators and urged by President Truman, now goes to the House.

Negotiations Likely For Separate Southern Operators Talks

John L. Lewis and Southern coal operators agreed to negotiate on where and when new talks should begin to replace the current contract expiring June 30. Northern Western and Steel Company groups have not yet moved toward negotiations, and Lewis may send a notice soon. The miners face a potential standoff by July if no agreement is reached by then. Taft Hartley requires 60 days notice to strike. President Moody of the Southern Coal Producers Association will meet UMW leaders to set locations and dates for separate talks.

Drunken Abductor Seizes Three Pregnant Army Wives

A drunken man abducted three pregnant army wives near Columbia Georgia yesterday. He hid with them for 12 hours, brandished a pistol, and threatened harm if necessary. The women escaped after 22 hours and were driven by strangers to Milton, Florida before reporting to Army investigators at Fort Benning.

Heirs of the late Andrew C. Bagent of Brunswick renewed their search for $32,000 in bonds on Thursday after reporting new developments to Register of Wills Harry D. Radcliff. They say the securities are Baltimore & Ohio Railroad bonds placed with Mrs. Minnie C. Manville, not government bonds, and an immediate investigation will be started with potential court action planned.
