Fire destroys a 12 room dwelling on Dr. Norvell Belt farm near Dickerson. Search for farm hand William Ambrose yields no human remains. A missing .32 revolver and rings were reported, a man matching Grimes attire was seen nearby before flames.
Henry A. Wallace testified that a Russian March 21 offer to lift the Berlin blockade was withheld to avoid undermining the North Atlantic Pact. He urged delaying action on the treaty until after a foreign ministers conference and estimated the pact’s cost could reach thirty billion dollars, far above the official figure.
Europe greets the May 12 Berlin blockade end as a glimmer of relief in the cold war with reactions split by east and west. Western nations credit allied diplomacy and airlifts. communists claim Moscow won a round. The public, meanwhile, hopes for lasting calm amid the tense standoff. Coal operators meet in Washington to respond to John Lewis on separate contract talks scheduled for June 6 at Bluefield, Virginia.
Washington May 3 The NLRB trial examiner found the CIO Furniture Workers union and Local 472 guilty of violence threats and obstructing plant entrances during a 1947 strike at Hardwood Flooring Co Hagerstown Md The examiner rejected a request that the unions be required to pay the wages lost by workers kept from the plant by picketing The case moved to the NLRB for argument on appeal
Washington May 547 The Senate debated the Federal aid to education bill amid a clash over church state relations. Senator McMahon proposed amending the measure to allow funds to cover school bus services for all children including those in private and parochial schools. He argued auxiliary services like buses and recreation are permissible despite a Supreme Court ruling prohibiting federal funds for religious activities. The Senate already approved a separate measure granting 35 million dollars yearly for health examinations for children in all schools.
Washington May 5. Miss Drucie Snyder daughter of the secretary of the Treasury christened the Baltimore and Ohios new Columbian streamliner today with water from the Potomac and Lake Michigan. The million dollar all coach train will start service May 15 between Washington and Chicago. The ceremony at Union Station kicked off a series of showings at Pittsburgh Connellsville Pa Cumberland Md Gary Ind and Youngstown Akron and Fostoria Ohio.
Three New York physicians announced priscal as a polio pain relief drug. In 120 patients at Kingston Avenue Hospital it reduced pain and spasm within 24 hours, enabling earlier therapy and easier limb straightening. The drug works orally or by injection and does not halt the virus itself.
Shanghai reports Chinese Communists join a Russian backed alliance with North Korean and Burmese Reds amid a joint struggle against imperial powers. The remains of Lt Millard B Cassell of 28 West South Street arrived in the city and were moved to the funeral home 106 East Church Street. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 PM with interment at Mount Olivet cemetery. Surviving are his parents a sister a brother and four nephews. His widow later remarried in London England.
In Girardville Pennsylvania four miners remain trapped 800 feet below after a mine fire. Rescue teams work in three-man squads to build a fresh air shaft while gas monitors show high carbon monoxide. A pumping failure raised water risk as ventilation efforts continue.

The State Planning Commission newsletter reports Frederick County population at about 61,900 for 1949 with 17,200 families, and Frederick city at 39,400. It notes Frederick County manufacturing value at 40,926,000 and total state manufacturing at 2,272,000, ranking Carroll County first.
The County Music Committee of Home makers Clubs presents an 8 p m Friday festival in Frederick High School auditorium to celebrate Home Demonstration Week. A 33 voice chorus joins solos and group singing with no admission. Members include Mrs Earl Mitchell director and Mrs George D Gorsuch accompanist.
Leaders of three major political groups in the House agreed that the Truman administration holds negative but not positive control. Privately they said the administration can stop major legislation it opposes but cannot push through its own big domestic bills, citing actions on rent control pensions for veterans and labor relations this year.
The Passano Foundation announced today a $5,000 award for outstanding medical research will be presented to Dr. Oswald T. Avery of Nashville, Tenn. The award highlights notable advances in medical science and honors Dr. Avery’s contributions.
The four powers announced that the Russian blockade of Berlin would end May 12 under a Big Four agreement. Western counter blockade of the Soviet zone will also end as negotiations proceed in Paris May 23. An airlift will continue until Berlin stockpiles reach 200,000 tons, then standby.
Rockville May 54- Tracy Shaw Montgomery county political leader plans to retire as the county's representative on the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. The county Democratic State Central committee will recommend Warren Browning a Bethesda trial magistrate to complete Shaw's term. If Governor Lane appoints Browning the committee would have James R. Miller of Chevy Chase named Bethesda trial magistrate. It also recommends Richard F. Green of Kensington reappointed to the Maryland National Park and Planning Commission and Donald E. Gingery of Bethesda replacing Clarence C. Keiser on the commission. Miller is a former state trooper and Marine veteran.
Turin mourns as Italy’s champion Torino soccer club perishes in a three motor plane crash near Superga Hill. The jet collided with the cathedral setting, killing 31 including 18 players, the coach, managers, writers, and crew while returning from Lisbon.
Washington May 3 A President Truman's top economic adviser forecasts a further easing of the cost of living. Dr Edwin G Nourse chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers said we are still in a period of healthy disinflation. Nourse and council members met at the White House to report the economy. He noted the cost of living in March was 3.2 percent under the August 1948 peak but there was a slight upturn in April.
Frederick leaders report nearly $3,500 raised for McCurdy Field modernization with a May 15 goal of 20,000. Veterans of Foreign Wars contribute 2,000 in five year notes, while the Elks add 300. Local clubs and individuals continue pledging funds to fund upgrades, expand seating to 5,000, improve field surfaces, entrances, restrooms, and plan football games and events at the improved site.
Detroit May 5 65 000 union members walked out at noon in a major strike against Ford Motor Co At Rouge and Lincoln Mercury plants production lines halted and assembly speed disputed Peace talks continued beyond the deadline with leaders saying no settlement in sight but open to quick agreement. Walter Reuther led UAW negotiations seeking production standards and even distribution of manpower at cited plants. The strike threatens to tighten nationwide production across Ford operations within days.
The weather bureau said the mercury may reach 90 degrees today for the first time this year as a hot spell drives into the weekend. Yesterday’s official high was 87 with 88 or 90 expected today, followed by continued warmth and humidity. County Agent Henry R. Shoemaker noted favorable conditions for corn planting and farm work, with wheat looking good and barley in excellent shape despite prior wet delays.
