Living Costs May Go Down Amid Economic Talk

Washington on May 5 reports a government economist forecast a further easing of living costs this year while urging business leaders not to fear a collapse. Dr Edwin G Nourse noted March prices 3.2 percent below August 1948 with a mild April uptick and a path to healthy disinflation. Chamber speakers warned against a spending spree delaying readjustment, stressing private sector revival and balanced policy to prevent a postwar slump.

Chamber warns tax boost could derail private expansion plans

Dexter M. Keezer of McGraw-Hill warned Congress that a 4 billion dollar tax increase proposed by President Truman may disrupt private sector expansion. He noted that businesses plan 55 billion dollars in capital spending over five years to modernize and grow, a level he said would sustain prosperity.

Columbian Streamliner Debuts on B and O Route

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad unveiled the Columbian railcar set for the Washington Chicago overnight run, with eight cars including a Strata-Dome observation car and two diesel-electric units. The train debuts May 15 with ceremonial bottle breaking by Miss Druck Snyder and pigeon release.

New Columbian on route before inaugural May 15

The new Columbian will be shown in cities along its route prior to its May 15 inaugural run. Equipment from the current Columbian will be reassigned to other B&O trains as the new era begins.
