Howard To End Segregation in Howard County Schools
Howard County Board of Education voted to end segregation in public schools grades one through five for the 1956 fall term and allow attendance at the school of a child’s choice subject to space and board approval. Transportation will continue on the current basis with transfers handled by the transportation supervisor and superintendent approval. Requests for transfers run May 7 to 13, excluding Saturday. The board aims to expand plants and someday offer equal facilities countywide, noting desegregation will take time and cooperation is needed. A Citizens Committee on Desegregation recommended mediation, and several schools may be required over time. Also reported, eight-year-old Patty Belle Moore was treated for a minor bath-house injury at a local hospital, and a meeting was set for 8 p.m. at the YMCA to plan a Frederick City Softball League revival with at least six teams.
