The National Railroad Passenger Corporation assumed operation of 182 trains today, reducing 178 trains as it forms a government backed backbone system. Inaugural events planned at Union Station in Washington and ceremonies nationwide mark the shift to Amtrak with 314 cities served on 20 600 miles of track across 21 routes.

Three Frederick youths drown in Buckeystown Dam boat accident
The bodies of Merrii Wayne Tyeryar 17 Paul Douglas Derry 18 and Brunner Steinhaus II 16 were recovered at Buckeystown Dam after their aluminum flat bottom boat capsized in 10 to 12 feet of water. Two Silver Spring fishermen located them around 7 a.m. All three cousins had joined for a fishing trip the prior night. Extreme cold and nighttime conditions likely contributed. a triple funeral is planned with Etchison Funeral Home handling arrangements.
