May Day Celebrations Across World Mark Tense Atmosphere
Workers observed May Day with parades in multiple lands amid Cold War tension. In Moscow Premier Khrushchev opened the parade after receiving the 1958 Nobel Peace Prize, while Malinovsky boasted Soviet strength but avoided last year’s rocket displays. Berlin saw a split rally scene with West Berliners allied with the free world and East Berliners marching under Communist leadership. Peng Dehuai and Soviet officers led a large turnout in East Berlin and China’s capital Beijing echoed with huge crowds at Tiananmen Square.
