A D Willard Former Judge Dies At 86 In Maryland
Arthur D Willard former associate judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit died at a Baltimore nursing home after long illness at age 86. Born July 25 1872 in Burkittsville he studied at St Johns College Annapolis and was admitted to the Frederick county bar in 1898. He served as State s Attorney two terms and later as bankruptcy referee before being elected associate judge in 1930 retiring July 25 1942. He was active in Grace United Church of Christ and a Mason survived by two sons Arthur D Willard Jr Augusta Ga and Henry R Willard with remaining family in Maryland and Georgia.

Two Jailed For Attempt At Robbery In Frederick
Frederick police captured Le Roy Dodson 23 and a juvenile after a late night attempted break in at Sears Roebuck on West Patrick Street. They allegedly damaged a rear door, glass and left a screwdriver and hammer at the scene. Dodson faces charges of attempted breaking and entering and larceny. the juvenile is in detention awaiting delinquency proceedings. Police pursue possible related burglaries and recoveries continue.

Optometrists Here May 17 Honor Berry at Convention
Berry of South Dakota will be honored at the Marviané Optometric Association spring meeting on Sunday May 17 at the Francis Scott Hotel Frederick. Congressman Berry a fourth term House member will receive a plaque for his work in legislation affecting optometry and will be the main speaker at the banquet attended by over 100 optometrists and wives. The day begins at 10 am with educational sessions by Dr Richard Tarrant and film previews from the Illinois School of Dramatics. Dr Ivan E Tellis chairs the convention committee and Dr Marvin L Getz presides.

Roads Board To Open Bids May 19
Frederick County Roads Board will open bids May 19 at noon for two federal aid road projects. The Old Frederick road between Maryland 76 and U S 15 south of Emmitsburg will be shouldered and resurfaced for 2.017 miles. Mapleville School road from Maryland 26 to Liberty Linganore road will be paved and shoulder’d for 1.89 miles with a three inch asphalt surface.

Godfrey Recovers After Lung Cancer Surgery Night
Arthur Godfrey spent a satisfactory postoperative night at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center after a five hour operation to remove a left lung tumor. Doctors said the upper lobe was removed with the contained tumor and his condition was good though two months may pass before he can return to the air.
