Capitol Hill wanes on super collider project
Enthusiasm for the Superconducting Super Collider fades as lawmakers worry about its 4.4 billion price tag amid budget constraints. Once courting co sponsors, many members now question the project viewing it as pork rather than a major scientific achievement. Science or pork the atom smasher debate grows intense
The planned 1996 atom collider would use 10060 magnets to propel particles through an underground tunnel, enabling study of matter’s building blocks. House co sponsors reached 271 in August, with 25 states bidding for hosting. only seven remain. Critics call the $363 million yearly cost pie in the sky, while supporters warn cutting funding would cede leadership in high energy physics. Legislative battles continue as a trio of opponents vows to halt the project even as House leaders push funding and allies seek international cost sharing.
