Republicans Push Pending Cuts in House Approval
Washington AP Republicans cleared a 17 billion dollar cuts package aimed at housing aid education and other programs in a near party line 242 to 190 vote. The measure seeks to trim last year appropriations and advance toward a balanced federal deficit by 2002 while provoking sharp Democratic criticism over cuts to public housing summer youth jobs education and food aid for women and children. House Speaker Newt Gingrich kept moderates on board by dropping stricter Medicaid abortion restrictions amid tension over the package.
