Favor Boost In Tax On Horse Race Bets

Annapolis March 15 The Ways and Means Committee approved a 2 percent hike in take on bets at harness and half mile tracks. A revised formula would let small tracks keep 11 percent of the first 1.5 million dollars and share 12 percent on the rest. harness tracks get 11 percent of the first 2 million and 7.34 percent thereafter. Total current take is six percent with four percent to the state. Reckord said the changes would add about 30,000 to the five half mile tracks and 80,000 to each of four harness tracks, plus ensure 250,000 annually to the Maryland Fair Board and 60,000 to state funds. A new improvement funds bill would treat them as taxes to be appropriated back to the tracks. Attorney General Hammond noted this would avoid federal taxes. The bill would raise the improvement fund from 0.5 to 1 percent of the six percent take.
