Creighton Underdog Faces Maryland in NCAA First Round
Creighton coach Tom Apke says his unranked squad, 20-6, won’t be overawed by fourth-ranked Maryland in the Midwest regional first round at Lubbock Coliseum. He notes the team’s tragedy after Mike Heck’s death sharpened focus and altered their style as 6-9 Doug Brookins shifts to a roaming post. Maryland, 22-4, features guards Brad Davis Mo Howard and John Lucas in a quick three-guard attack, while Creighton must tighten defense and patient ball handling. The winner advances to Las Cruces for the Midwest Regional semifinals March 20-22.
