Students rally for tougher alcohol laws in Annapolis

About 30 Frederick County students joined several hundred Maryland peers in a rain soaked rally at the State House to push for two bills. One would fine adults who allow minors to drink and the other would criminalize possession of any false identification with fines up to 1000 dollars.

Census shows Frederick County growth slowing in 1995

Census Bureau estimates place Frederick County population at 175,399 as of July 1 1995 up 3 949 from 1994. State totals exceed 5 million with 5 042 438. County aging trends continue with 16 612 residents 65 and older and births easing to 2 419.

Independent voters blocked in closed primary in Maryland

Independent voters were kept from the Republican primary as the motor voter law auto registers them as independents if they do not select a party. William Moran, who has voted since age 21, was unable to cast a ballot in Braddock Heights. County election officials received about 50 calls from similarly affected voters and noted a 1,200 rise in independents.

Frederick County landlords push to curb lead paint law

A Frederick County group, the Property Owners Association of Greater Frederick, urged the House Environmental Matters Committee to pass bills narrowing the 1994 lead paint abatement program and defeating mandatory child lead screening. They favor Delegate D Bruce Poole's bill constraining the law to rentals with under six year old children, removing pregnant women from at risk provisions, and delaying abatement timelines.

Frederick County receives state grant to boost school to work link

A three year nine hundred sixty three thousand nine hundred dollar grant funds career instruction and apprenticeships for Frederick County students, from kindergartners to high schoolers, to improve work readiness and attract new business.
