Senators Reported Receiving Speaking Fees After Honoraria Ban Vote

Maryland's Barbara Mikulski and Paul Sarbanes along with 38 other senators admitted taking more than $920,000 in honoraria for 1990 despite voting to ban such payments. George Mitchell led the list of those who voted no, with $30,000 in speaking fees plus salary. Many kept most and donated the remainder, arguing the practice reflects rules and cost of living, not influence.
