Frederick County endures a blistering day as temperatures peak at 95 with no immediate relief. Heat records say the 95 degree reading is the hottest since last August. Officials warn of continuing highs with hazy skies and scattered thundershowers expected this week.
City officials and the Frederick City Recreation Commission toured 16 parks including East Third Chapel Monocacy and College Estates to assess status. Mayor FE Paul Magaha praised the parks as in excellent condition and noted ongoing and future park development for growing neighborhoods.
A strong Central California quake rattled nerves across Ventura, Santa Barbara, Kern and Kings Counties with minor damage. A chimney fell on a Parkfield house and plaster cracked a San Luis Obispo police station. No extensive injuries reported. Seismologists rated the first tremor at 5.0 and a later aftershock at 5.3 on the Richter scale.
Two area residents sustained minor injuries in separate city accidents. Curtis E. Fry, 6, was hit on Abrecht Place when he stepped back into a moving truck driven by Kenneth R. Wagerman, 24, of Graceham. Fred Tyergar, 42, was struck by a car driven by Dennis W. Brightwell, 18, from North Market Street to West Third Street. Neither case produced charges. officers Pfc. Ray N. me and Pvt. Willam H. Crabu investigated.
The Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Association announced a new price of 6.20 per hundredweight effective July 1, a rise of about 46 cents to distributors. Local buyers can still purchase milk at current regional prices until the change takes effect as distributors and grocers anticipate coordinating increases.
The annual radio controlled model airplane meet by the District of Columbia Radio Control Model Club will be at Frederick Airport over the Fourth of July weekend from July 2 to 4, 9 am to 5 pm daily. John E. Patton predicts contestants from many East Coast states and varied model entries, with record registration anticipated. The Frederick Civil Air Patrol Squadron and Paul Cochran back the event, CAP Maj Alfred C. Dean says a concession stand will raise funds for the cadet aerospace education program.
Painting of two hangars at Frederick Municipal Airport began Monday. The project costs 1500 dollars. City Engineer Robert J Rothenhoefer said the structures were rusted and needed paint for years. Completion is expected within 10 days. Irving and Irving of Arlington, Virginia, are doing the job.

George B. Stupp, president and manager of the Fabric Shop Inc., 242 N. Market St., filed Monday as a Democratic primary candidate for the House of Delegates. Born 1918 in Frederick City, he attended local schools and is the son of Harry D. Stup and the late Elizabeth Herring Stup. A lifelong Democrat, he previously operated the Barbara Fritchie Service Station, served three years in the Army Air Corps in World War II, and returned to civilian life.
Bob Seagren, the world record holder, will compete Saturday night in the men's pole vault at the National AAU Women's and Girl's Track Meet at Thomas Johnson High School stadium. Ed Kirk of the South Atlantic AAU announced his acceptance. Seagren holds the outdoor record of 17 feet 5 1/2 inches from Fresno and the indoor record of 17 feet 3/4 inch from Albuquerque. He is among the weekend’s top attractions, joined by miler Jim Grelle, who ran third in the National AAU Championship last weekend. Seagren’s schedule was moved to Saturday due to his Zurich commitments.
The Frederick County Board of Education rejected all bids for Frederick High School renovation and will rebid, possibly scaled down, with identical low bids of 609000 from Dallas Con Contractors Inc. and J. B. Ferguson & Co. Inc. Also approved a 30740 bid from Maris Equipment Co. for a Governor Thomas Johnson High audio video system to aid information retrieval.
Frederick County Commissioners vote to form a resource and development coordinating committee and a local resource center for Federal Aid. The title of Federal Aid Coordinator becomes Development Coordinator, currently held by Randolph Rosencrantz. The plan aims to unify State and Federal aid across departments with flexible committee membership and a public resource center offering information on aid from federal, state, and private sources.
In New York trading, stocks extended their decline in moderate early trading as investors reassessed recent losses. The Dow Jones and S&P 500 moved lower amid cautious sentiment with several sectors under pressure.
Frederick County authorities report no new leads in a wave of eight barn fires over three months. State Police investigator William L. Newcomer says the same person is likely responsible for all the blazes. Total damages exceed $145,000.
Argentina's military leaders toppled President Arturo Illia in a bloodless coup to curb Peronist influence. Illia fled Casa Rosada as Lt. Gen. Pascual A. Pistarini and other chiefs formed a junta, with Lt. Gen. Juan Carlos Ongania slated as interim president. Vice President Carlos Perette escaped to Uruguay. the guard occupied Casa Rosada, bank holiday declared, offices to operate normally, amid Argentina's long cycle of coups since Peron’s 1955 ouster.
U S forces started leaving the Dominican Republic by air and sea at daybreak. About 900 troops from the 320th Artillery boarded two ships to return to Ft. Bragg as other units boarded transport planes from San Isidro airbase. The move marks the start of dismantling the 8,000 man Inter-American peace force, with the OAS having voted to withdraw within 90 days following Balaguer's June 1 election and upcoming inauguration.
Dr Norvell Belt of Dickerson a noted area real estate man and retired urologist filed today as a Democratic candidate for re election as Judge of the Orphans Court. Belt 63 president of Norvell Belt Real Estate Company Inc was elected to the four year term in 1960. He was born in Washington, son of Dr Edward C Belt and Emily Norvell Belt. He earned AB and MD degrees from George Washington University and did post graduate study at Johns Hopkins Harvard University of Chicago and Mayo Clinic. He practiced urology in Washington 23 years and in Frederick County thereafter. Continued on page
