Fort Ritchie closing prompts regional economic scramble
Maryland and Pennsylvania leaders warn up to 20 000 jobs could vanish if BRAC closes Fort Ritchie as local officials fear ripple effects on Franklin County real estate, schools, and small businesses. Politicians urge private sector development while weighing alternative uses for the base. Separately an American Airlines DC 10 plunged into severe turbulence near O Hare, with 19 hospitalized but injuries not believed serious.

The mayor argues for continued APFO delays until facilities rules are in place, while opponents seek lifting the moratorium to allow targeted annexations and new growth. Residents cite school capacity and amenities, and developers push for individual consideration amid border limits and local land ownership.
