Leno's Tonight Show faces rough start and mixed reviews
NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno began with mixed reviews and staff tensions as Leno reshaped the format after Johnny Carson. Leno defends his approach while critics note the absence of Carson tribute and changes in guest emphasis. Ratings show a younger audience but a decline from week to week, with stiff late night competition looming.
