Flooding Forces Mass Evacuation at Point of Rocks

The Potomac River flood crest forced wide evacuations last night in Point of Rocks with 250 to 300 residents moved to higher ground. Fire, police, and Army Reserve units aided as water rose to two stories in downtown areas and towns like Walkersville Woodsboro faced isolation. No injuries or drownings were reported.

Residents Urged to Boil Water Amid Sewage Problems

With sewage problems plaguing the area, Frederick City officials urge residents to boil drinking water for at least 20 minutes if unsure about purity. If water is from flooded pumps or shows cloudiness or bad taste or odour, boil and treat the system with household bleach, then flush the plumbing after 12 hours.

Navy Amphib Pressed Into Service Here

State Police have pressed into immediate service from Fort Meade a large Mark IV Navy amphibious vehicle to search flood waters in Frederick County. The craft with 48 inch balloon tires will operate under emergency headquarters, with Lt Harold Basore as commander. Cumberland Barracks in charge, Lt Robert Snyder, and 12 troopers assist, while civilian crew from Fort Meade mans the vehicle.

Flooding prompts I-70S closures and widespread outages

State police warn that I-70S near the Monocacy River may close as the river rises toward flood levels and power and telephone services fail across Frederick County. Evacuations were made in Sagner, with shelters limited by high water, while Thurmont and Emmitsburg faced isolation from a repeater failure.

Agnes Toll Reaches 47 and Flood Warnings Escalate

Tropical Storm Agnes and a new inland storm drenched central Pennsylvania and southwestern New York as the Ohio River at Pittsburgh topped flood stage. The death toll reached 47 with many missing and major evacuations underway in western Pennsylvania and New York. The Point in downtown Pittsburgh reported water at 25.9 feet, with flood level at 25 feet and forecasts predicting river rises up to ten more feet as rain moved in from Ohio.

Litton Bionetics Wins NCI Ft Detrick Contract

The National Cancer Institute awards Litton Bionetics Inc. a prime contract to renovate manage and operate the NCI facility at Fort Detrick Maryland. The $6.85 million first year program aims to study cancer causing viruses and chemicals and to develop treatments while expanding staff to about 600 by 1976 and an operating budget of $20 million.

City Sewage Plant Flooded and Evacuated After Flood

Frederick officials report the city's sewage treatment plant flooded with primary tanks submerged and the plant evacuated. Sewage continues through pipelines toward the river bed while the Public Works Department on Hamilton Avenue is flooded and equipment towed out. Essential systems remain functional and city hall houses the department offices as crews prepare repair work once waters recede. The Monocacy River and local pumping stations are also flooded with access limited.
