Mantle suffers mild organ rejection after transplant
Baseball Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle, living in Dallas, is experiencing mild rejection of the liver he received in a June 8 transplant at Baylor University Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman said such rejection is common and occurs in about 65 percent of liver transplants. A liver biopsy was performed to investigate unusual test results. A news conference was planned for later today.

Man gets life for killing panda in China
Zhang Guangming shot a giant panda in Shaanxi province in 1993 and hid its pelt in a cave. He was sentenced to life in prison by the Xian Intermediate People’s Court for killing the animal and attempting to sell the fur with four accomplices. One accomplice got 12 years, two received 11 years, and the fourth was not caught. Giant pandas remain an endangered species with about 1,000 in the wild.
