Gas prices rise as reformulated fuel affects Maryland

AAA reports nationwide petrol costs up from 1.09 to 1.26 per gallon since June 1994 with a 17 cent year over year increase. Maryland uses reformulated gasoline to cut ozone and carbon monoxide, amid higher crude prices and seasonal summer demand. Local gas station owner Ray Heaney notes customers travel less due to costs. White House vows to fight GOP budget plan

The White House pledges to oppose a Republican plan aimed at balancing the budget and cutting taxes. Leaders announced a deficit reduction outline for 2002 built on cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, and other domestic programs, with $245 billion in tax cuts over seven years and total deficit reduction near $983 billion.

Aughenbaugh and Cooley named to Frederick County school board

Governor Glendening appointed outgoing Burkittsville mayor Deborah Aughenbaugh and banker Gordon Cooley to the Frederick County Board of Education for five-year unpaid terms beginning July 1. They replace Susan Rovin and Harry deMoll. Aughenbaugh, 72, has led Burkittsville since 1986 and has 23 years as a Frederick County elementary teacher.

Missing Arabian stallion found dead in woods near Wolfsville

Jeffrey Metzer, owner, had reported his purebred stallion Lone Brooks Lowry Hunter missing after fleeing with a gelding named Buddy on June 14. Anonymous tips led him to the scene off Highland School Road where the horse was discovered dead, reportedly after entanglement with children's play equipment near his home.

Couple faced again as sinkholes threaten Hamilton home

Harold and Violet Young recount a recurring sinkhole nightmare on Hamilton Avenue. After repairing a half-destroyed home two years ago, repeated sinkholes have opened on their property, with the latest in the driveway Wednesday night. State trims funding replaces Disabled Assistance program

Maryland ends the Disabled Assistance and Loan Program at the start of the new fiscal year replacing it with TEMHA and the Primary Care for the Medically Indigent program. TEMHA holds 10 million statewide with Frederick County receiving a 101300 grant. DALP previously cost 35 million statewide for a 157 monthly stipend. County residents in the program total about 219 and received 400000 in benefits. Health care project cost 13 million statewide and supplied the center 85000 last year.
