Clarifies Confusion About Social Security Law Changes
HAGERSTOWN June 20 There will be no automatic increase in social security benefits on July 1 for current recipients says W S King manager of the Hagerstown Social Security Office Confusion stems from concurrent discussions of new amendments to the Social Security Act The 1950 amendments provided a September 1950 increase and the latest House passage would raise payments by at least five dollars monthly but not until August 1952 If enacted and approved benefits for August checks would rise and be paid in September Those already retired can file in July with benefits calculated under the new formula but may not receive the maximum rate immediately due to wage credit posting delays Workers may accept smaller payments now and later seek a recalculation to include earlier wages and receive any due back payments Mr King notes overpayments will be issued as wages are posted and recalculations completed
