Potomac River Builds Hope for American Heritage Ranking
The Potomac River is among 10 rivers nominated nationwide for designation as an American Heritage River under the initiative. Senator Sarbanes credited Friends of the Potomac and local supporters, while residents debated sovereignty concerns and the plan’s federal role. No new funds accompany the designation, but a river navigator would aid communities in securing federal grants. Brunswick and Frederick County endorsed the nomination amid opposition that Maryland would lose river sovereignty. Clinton may accept or reject the committee’s recommendations.
