The Mallards Captains Butch and Carolyn Mallard are being transferred from Frederick to Morgantown West Virginia after years of service at the local Salvation Army church. Majors Sam and Mary Kay Hearne arrive from Parkersburg to take their place. The family includes daughter Beth who stays to finish nursing, and sons Matthew and Rebekah. The couple met when Carolyn preached at The Salvation Army and later married, rising to co captains.

Planners clear roadblock for soccer complex
Frederick County Planning Commission approved a tentative water use for the Sports Plex on 52 acres off New Design Road adjoining Babbitt Baseball Camp property. The plan includes 16 outdoor soccer fields and a 100,000 square-foot indoor arena, with Babbitt Baseball proposing six baseball fields six softball fields four multi purpose fields and a dormitory. Both groups will later switch from temporary water taps to permanent lines in the McKinney outfall planned for 2004.

Filby seeks second term as Frederick County treasurer

Oak tree falls on home in Mount Pleasant
A 40-foot oak tree toppled onto a Mount Pleasant house Tuesday evening as a family sought shelter from rain. The tree, about 2 1/2 feet in diameter, split on impact, punching a hole in the kitchen roof and piercing the stairs ceiling. Owner Chris Barbee 37 and family of Adrienne and three children aged 8 6 and 4 fled to neighbors and stayed there Tuesday night as a tree service removed debris the next day.
