Should Smith Island be saved from the rising sea
Near Rhodes Point Maryland 70 feet off Smith Island the Army Corps of Engineers uses geotubes and dredged sand to shore the coast at a cost of 14 million dollars. The project aims to slow erosion and protect wildlife while critics warn the island may sink beneath the bay within decades. Residents value preservation of culture as boats jam the marsh edges and three tiny towns cling to a fading way of life.
