Bennett says drug war working cocaine shortage may spur violence
National drug control director William J. Bennett warned that a cocaine shortage, evidenced by rising wholesale prices in Los Angeles and New York, could trigger violence this summer as traffickers compete for scarcer supply. He credited Colombia's crackdown and U.S. enforcement for disrupting cartels, while DEA officials urged caution in declaring a nationwide shortage. Prices cited include New York up to 35,000 per kilogram, with shifts to smaller deals and diversified regional patterns.
