Banner effort unfolds on giant Smithsonian flag gantry
The Smithsonian National Museum of American History showcases a long term preservation project for the Star-Spangled Banner. A 60 foot long flag undergoes conservation in a climate controlled lab with 68 to 70 degree heat and 50 percent humidity. Conservators test acidity and color, lift threads, and plan a permanent display sealed with inert gas. About $18 million will be spent on the 1814 flag, which cost the US Army $405.80 in 1814.
