Soap Box Derby Course Is Selected
The stamp of approval was given the Soap Box Derby racing hill on West Patrick street running east from Jefferson street by Thomas Mohler, district engineer of the State Roads Commission following an inspection of the race course yesterday. The race will be held on July 16, and Mr. Mohler indicated that one or two spots will need attention before that time. But he concluded that the surface of West Patrick street would be smooth enough for the powerless cars. Mr. Mohler inspected the course along with Joseph P. Turner, representative of her Chevrolet Sales, Inc. and George B. Delaplane, Jr. of the co-sponsoring Junior Chamber of Commerce. The News-Post is the third local sponsor of the race. "The street is holding up remarkably well," Mr. Mohler stated following the inspection, "in view of the extremely heavy vehicular traffic on Patrick street." A bituminous concrete topping was applied to the street before the first derby race was held four years ago and no major changes have been made in the surface since that time. Sponsors of the individual racers and the drivers are receiving show cards stating they are sponsoring a car and driver in the 1952 Tri-County Soap Box Derby. Sponsors often work closely with the young racer-builders and give advice and tips on construction of the motorless cars. All racers are fettered with the name of the sponsor on the day of the race.
