Washington weighs military command reform in postwar crisis
In Washington on June 8, the Senate Armed Services and Senate Foreign Relations committees confront a critical postwar issue: how to manage national defense if war breaks out. The hearings reveal a lack of coordination among executive agencies, risking U N allied forces and U S military effectiveness. The Joint Chiefs of Staff face limits from the State Department and foreign governments, complicating hot pursuit permissions and strategic actions in Korea. The piece cites testimony about diary records, questions over who ordered a session, and broader confusion over civilian military boundaries, underscoring urgent need for clear command and policy.
