Kent Schrieber of Hagerstown escaped injury when a crop dusting plane failed its engine and flipped over after clipping a stone fence in a clover field north of Thurmont. He said the craft was about 50 feet up and narrowly avoided woods near Sabillasville Elementary School.

Mandel denies targeting in federal probe into Maryland politics
Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel says he has no indication he is under federal investigation amid a widening corruption probe. The AP notes Mandel represented Hess and received fees, while prosecutors question Mandel’s ties to Hess and Rodgers, who run Tidewater Insurance Associates.
Pine probe continues into Maryland public official
Towson Maryland James Pine general counsel to the Maryland Public Service Commission remains under state investigation for possible involvement in a Baltimore County kickback scandal. Baltimore County State's Attorney Sandra O'Connor said Governor Mandel had not questioned her staff about the probe before stating Pine likely innocent. Pine, a former state senator, was named as an unindicted co conspirator in a federal extortion case against Dale Anderson. Mandel said he found no evidence of wrongdoing by Pine though he spoke with people who had information. The kickback count against Pine was dropped during Anderson's trial. Anderson serves a five year federal term. Pine chaired the Senate Economic Affairs Committee and had ties to utilities regulated by the Public Service Commission. O'Connor began the state probe in February after receiving material from federal prosecutors in the Anderson case.
