Proposals Of Operators Are Given In Coal Talks
In Bluefield West Virginia on June 6 1947 the Southern Coal Producers Association outlined four contract changes and rejected a shorter work day for miners while formal proposals for a new July 1 start were presented. John L Lewis was absent as a team of United Mine Workers officials led the talks. The operators pressed to end the workers obligation clause and memorial periods while tightening welfare fund rules and eliminating the half hour lunch break. Moody said other issues remain and the miners will reply later. Separately Lewis asked the U.S. Court of Appeals to overturn an NLRB ruling that his contract with captive mines is illegal and to halt the union shop clause.
