Omaha Beach Remnants Sold as Scrap By Belgian Firms
On Normandy sands where the Doughboys fought five years ago scrap iron merchants from Belgium are assessing wrecks left by battle. About 20 landing barges lie on the shore as steam shovels carve trenches for graves. Lonesome hulls are refloated and hauled away by tugs toward Antwerp. Local officials lament the removal of wrecks once intended as monuments. Staff Sergeant Richard Roberts recalls the invasion's chaos and the few survivors from his unit. Local estimates put salvage at 50000 to 1,000,000 tons of metal valued at about 14 dollars per ton with copper fittings fetching higher prices.
