Vandalism Hits Culler Memorial in Baker Park

The Culler Memorial near Culler Lake in Baker Park was damaged over the weekend with a missing bronze plaque and magenta paint. City officials voiced concern but cited limited patrols and lack of reports, noting prior vandalism and an 11 p.m. curfew with no posted public drinking rules.

Final Symphony Concert June 7

The final Baltimore Symphony Orchestra concert of the 1971 72 season is set for June 7 at 8 p.m. in Thomas Johnson High School auditorium. Music director Sergio Comissiona leads Brahms Double Concerto with Isador Sasilov and Mihaly Virizlay. Berlioz Le Corsair Overture and Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 complete the program. Frederick County Symphony Society sponsors the event for season members and will seek renewal pledges before and during intermission. Subscriptions cover four concerts in the 1972 73 season.

Pennsylvania man charged with marijuana possession

Michael John Kurlitz 24 of Westport Pennsylvania was stopped on West Patrick Street after erratic driving noted by Pvt. William Brown. Police found marijuana seeds and a pipe in the car. Kurlitz is jailed in Frederick County on 2000 dollar bond awaiting July 6 district court hearing. Car owner Timothy V. Horning of Williamsport Pa. Car impounded.

Thunderstorm Hits Frederick County with Heavy Rain

A Sunday storm pelted Frederick with hail and 2.89 inches of rain in Emmitsburg. Tom's Creek overflowed in the north, high winds toppled trees, and Potomac Edison reported transformer and wire trouble across the county. A Tuscarora pole fire followed a car strike. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with mid 70s, then upper 50s overnight, and a 30 percent chance of rain Tuesday.

Jury Frees Angela Davis in California Trial

Jurors who acquitted Angela Davis say there was little disagreement on her innocence from the start. The forewoman noted no major discord as the panel of seven women and five men delivered the verdict after deliberations began. Davis wept and celebrated with supporters outside the Marin County case, insisting the ruling was a victory for the people not just justice.

Maryland Republicans finalize their convention lineup with 10 at large delegates chosen by the State Central Committee. Jets Hit Bridges Near Hanoi In Bombing Run

Eight U S Air Force jets struck within 50 miles of the Chinese border and demolished twin bridges on Hanoi's northwest rail line with five 2000 pound laser guided bombs. Other rail bridges were not hit but targeted in future. The Ticonderoga joined the 7th Fleet to hunt submarines off Vietnam as Navy planes pressed attacks on river traffic and transport networks in North Vietnam.

Deficit Outlook Improves as Debt Limit Hike Sought

The 1972 deficit is now estimated at 26 billion dollars the highest since WWII but 12.8 billion below January projections. The Nixon administration asks Congress to raise the national debt limit by 15 billion to 465 billion. Projections for 1973 place the deficit near 27 billion with tax withholdings up due to revised tables. Internal Treasury gains come from over withholding and delayed revenue sharing bill action.

Britain’s royal family gathers at Windsor Castle for the funeral of the former King Edward VIII. F&M Bank seeks new branch in Discovery near Walkersville

Farmers and Mechanics National Bank of Frederick applied to open a branch in the Discovery development near Walkersville. The nine existing Frederick County offices include Walkersville and the Discovery office would operate alongside. The plan was filed with the regional administration of National Banks in Richmond Virginia. Frederick County has 29 banking offices.
