Two Assaults Top Police Work Friday
A Madison Street man was shot in a South Market Street bowling alley Friday night. Eugene A. Mitchell, 29, of Madison Street, was treated and released from Frederick Memorial Hospital around 12 a.m. Saturday after a gunshot wound to the left leg. Police say Mitchell was shot during a minor altercation at the Diamond Bowling Alley on South Market Street before 11:30 p.m. Friday. Earlier that day, Mrs. Hazel I Shaff, 69, of East Third Street, reported being knocked down near Klinehart Alley and West Third Street and having about $80 stolen from her purse. She was treated and released for a minor head injury at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Fire Injures 7 Year Old Boy Near Williamsport
A blaze on old State Route 63 near Williamsport in Washington County seriously injured seven year old John D. Pennington and destroyed the Pennington home. The child suffered burns on hands arms and face and smoke inhalation. He underwent emergency tracheotomy and was later flown to Baltimore University Hospital. The family was trapped in the house.

Two Men Injured In U S 40 Crash Near Hollow Road
Two young men, Michael F. Briggs and Cletus C. Hill, were critically injured when Briggs’ eastbound sedan pulled into the westbound lane to pass, clipped George E. Lewis, slammed into a tree, and was demolished. Both Briggs and Hill were flown to University Hospital Baltimore by State Police helicopter after emergency care at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
