Surprising Lions reach state title game in baseball
Walkersville High School, once rainbound and fieldless, surged to the state baseball finals under coach Tom Ford. Led by pitcher Scott Campbell and a stout defense, the Lions won the county and district titles and blanked Centennial 4 0 in the state semifinal. Ford, in his 18th year, guides a team with five veterans and a shift to pitching with better control and speed changes. Seven Frederick players advance in the state tennis tournament at Essex Community College, led by Walkersville freshman Hetsy Broadwater who won girls singles, with others in boys singles and doubles.
