Brunswick, National reach District II final in rout

Frederick National blanked Middletown 13 0 Wednesday to advance to the District II final against Brunswick. Darrin Stone pitched seven strong innings allowing one baserunner past second with 12 hits backing him, including two run homers by Wayne Finley and Charles Watts. National leads 7 0 after three and added five more in the fifth as Middletown managed only a few scoring threats. The city team will host Brunswick Friday at 6 p.m. for the championship.

Brunswick Defeats Frederick Americano In Little League Semi

Mike Jackson homered twice and nearly hit a third as Brunswick advanced past defending district champion Frederick Americano in a district semifinal at Austin Angleberger Park. Jeff Payne pitched a four hit outing with eight strikeouts to earn the win. Frederick’s Troy Wilson homered unearned in the fourth. Brunswick will host Frederick National in Friday’s final at 6 p.m.

Thurmont advances to Senior II finals in sequence

Thurmont won two games on Wednesday to reach the Section 1 Senior Little League final, beating Havre de Grace 5-1 and Valley 6-5. They will face Valley at 5:30 p.m. for the sectional title, with a win earning a berth in Havre de Grace for the state tournament.

Tigers Top Orioles, Billingham Wins Fifth Straight

Detroit Tigers beat Baltimore 13-8 as Jason Thompson and Aurelio Rodriguez drive in two runs each and Jack Billingham improves to 10-5 with seventh inning relief from Bob Sykes. Thompson belts a two-run homer and Staub drives in a run for his 8th RBI of year.

Thurmont Elkton staged a rally in the top of the seventh to edge Thurmont H4 6-4 in state Senior Si bh League play. Thurmont musters two wins, faces Southern Maryland next at 2 p.m., then Elkton again at 6 p.m. Diana Powell Debtie Baust and Liss Sanders each had two hits, Thurmont total eight hits, four errors. Elkton 12 hits.

Third seed falls in Shipley tournament upset

In Frederick's Shipley's Open Tennis Tourney on Wednesday night third seed John Hammeant lost in a three set match. Fourth seed Rich Pollara won easily. One local team match highlighted today's slate. Other results include Nipley and Castillo Pollara doubles wins and Briggs windfall in women's doubles.
