Inflationary Spiral Pushes Prices Higher in June

Washington AP reports consumer prices rose 0.9 percent in June for the third straight month led by food housing and autos. If sustained for a year the increase would total about 11.4 percent. The Carter administration forecasts smaller rises ahead.

Inflation Traces Sharp June Rise in Food Costs

The Labor Department reports June saw a 0.4 percent drop in workers’ purchasing power, with wages up 0.5 percent while prices rose 1.3 percent for food. Beef up 5.6 percent, poultry dairy cereals and oils rose. vegetables and eggs fell. Housing up 1.2 percent, electricity 2.6 percent, postal costs up 14 percent. gasoline slipped. Despite overall price gains the entertainment sector fell 0.2 percent. CPI up 7.4 percent from June 1977. Strauss warned inflation could exceed 7.2 percent. Cable of six months caution amid predictions of continued rises.

FCC to Hold Hearing on Attracting Minority Students

Frederick Community College schedules a Thursday meeting on campus with public school authorities and community leaders to explain why minority enrollment may lag. A state report cites FCC among colleges not meeting affirmative action goals and aims for 10 percent minority enrollment by 1980, up from about five percent.

Gold price hits world record on London market

The London bullion market saw gold rise to a new world high in early afternoon trading with quotes around 200.05 dollars per ounce.
