City grocer J F Ewenhauer has secured a contract to supply groceries to the colored militia in camp at the junction. Henry Snyder of West Patrick street injured his right eye drilling rock. Dr J W L Hardesty will operate tomorrow at 10. Magistrate Turner remanded John Brannen Sheridan Coleman and Thomas Price for Grand Jury action in September. Ned Robinson, a slave once valued at 30,000 dollars, died in Hagerstown aged eighty seven, reportedly from a fall from a hay wagon. The note ends with praise for Tutt Liver Pills and their medical endorsements.
Three colored companies of militia from Cumberland and Baltimore with Monumental City Guards join at Camp Jackson for a week under a command ring led by Captain Robert P. Brown of the Fifth Regiment and include Captains Foster Coale Thames and others. Baltimore contingent led by Capt. George Matthews totals about fifty men. Local commentary praises the encampment and disciplined bearing of the troops. Tourists are urged to use Syrup of Figs for health.
Frederick Koehler and Thomas Fleming, workers in Messie D. C. Winebrenner & Co. tailors, fought over a pocket knife in the Frederick shop yesterday. Fleming was cut badly on the right hand, nearly severing a finger, as bystander Dr Geo Johneon attended and the injured man went home.
A horse frightened near the toll gate on the Spout Spring Turnpike bolted, throwing Mr Henry Gaver and his daughter from the carriage. The vehicle was destroyed. Mr Gaver suffered a head cut but is not seriously hurt. The horse ran into the city and was captured on West Sixth Street.
A special meeting of the Junior S. F. E. company reviewed reports from the committee on the upcoming September Baltimore excursion. No final action was taken. another meeting will be held next Monday night to finalize arrangements. A new reel and six improved torches with two lanterns were presented by General J. A. Steiner and accepted by President Ed. Koontz. Committee members included James Gilbert George Rilling Henry Wineberg George Koetler William Winebrewer Gumore Vanfossen F. Wertheimer Harry Young Thomas Myers Marion Haller J. N. Loy and Daniel Steiner.
