Married Grandson Proves Valid Under New Jersey Law

In New Jersey a chancery court ruled a marriage between a widow and her late husband’s grandson valid under current law. The decision, by Vice Chancellor Van Fivete, held the union not void though prohibited by church law, and valid until dissolution by a competent court. The case involved property after the husband’s death and rent disputes, with the priest having warned it was void.

Ice Jammed in June A Greenland Vessel Reaches Philadelphia

The American bark Ivastat, captained by Adersen, arrived in Philadelphia after a perilous voyage from Greenland. The crew endured seven days of brutal ice pressure, sighted glittering monsters and numerous bergs, but docked safely near Greenwich piers. The voyage highlighted an unusually cold Greenland season with three foot thick ice.

Wreck at Dunellen Hits Central New Jersey Freight Trains

A wet freight collision at Dunellen New Jersey on the Central New Jersey line halted all traffic for hours. A tramp stealing a ride was killed as rear units derailed and scattered fuel and freight cars. Engineer Dick Richards escaped with minor injuries while crews fought to clear the wreckage.

A Workman's Fortitude in Gas Stove Blast

Carpenter Jan Myers faced a deadly gasoline stove explosion while laboring on a building at Bataimong July 27. He bore the burning fuel on his shoulders, running into the street and then away from the flames to save the house, suffering severe burns to back arms feet. Bystanders doused him and the scene turned grisly as blood streamed from his injuries with little chance of recovery.

Nine Men Swim For Life In Ferry Tug Collision

A tugboat CG. T. Bergess owned by William H. Beard and capt. Oscar S. Squires sank within three minutes after being struck by the Brooklyn ferry at the foot of Congress Street in New York. Eight crewmen and Capt. Squires swam to safety, rescued by the tug N. B. Wheeler.
