Lewis Brothers & Co. Goes Into General Assignment

News from New York reports Lewis Bros. & Co., a major dry goods house at 8 Worth Street, made a general assignment to Cornelius N. Hicks. Liabilities estimated near 4 million dollars, with branches in Philadelphia Baltimore Boston and Chicago and several mills represented. Only one partner remains in city as others disperse for details and credit agencies reexamine the firm’s standing.

Kilrain Paints Baltimore in Pubic Spree

Jake Kilrain and his battle holder Johnnie Murphy caused a stir in Baltimore's central district as they spent the afternoon painting town. Crowds followed as they spent freely, attracting attention and prompting police to intervene with Murphy eventually being jailed.

Widow of Bolach details poverty after execution

Mrs Balack of Fen Argyl, widow of Michael Bolack who was hanged for murder in Belvidere, NJ, says poverty prevented her from visiting on the execution day. She later housed eight Hungarian boarders for $1 weekly each, with her last funds exhausted. She tearfully defended her husband, saying he was innocent but had no evidence.

Moonshiner in swamp hid still near Randolph township

A sensational probationer moonshiner case set for the September term in Tres Ten United States court. Henry Stiles, an old moonshiner, resisted arrest with a bayonet. a collector drew a pistol and the man surrendered. Authorities found a thirty gallon still and twenty five bottles of whisky in an old chest. He had a year of successful illegal distilling and vowed to improve.

Purchase of Veresty land in Wyoming and Luzerne counties

The Bowman's Creek Land and Improvement Company led by Julia Brown of Easton sells 15.05 acres of timberland north of Harvey's Lake, spanning Luzerne and Wyoming counties, to Albert Lewis, a Bear Creek lumber king, at about 22 per thousand feet. The tract, part wild wilderness, lies near the proposed States Line and Sullivan railroad extension. Shareholders include Wilbur, Sayre, Brown, Butler, Blakestree, Chenk, and Lewis.

New Yorkers Map Plans for World Fair in 182

Wealthy New Yorkers met at the mayor's office to discuss a world fair proposed for the city in 182. Mayor Grant chaired the planning and a committee of twenty was formed to oversee plans, with several officials named to committees on publicity, finance, legislation and site. Ex Gouvernor Cornell urged delaying the site committee. The meeting adjourned to await the chair's call.
