FDA Allows Import of Unapproved AIDS Drugs for Personal Use

FDA will formalize a program permitting AIDS patients to import small amounts of unapproved treatments. The policy, announced by Dr. Frank Young, aims to give patients more treatment choices. Critics warn of risks, while supporters see it as a step for patient autonomy and recognition of gay and drug-using communities. Ribavirin and dextran sulfate were cited as examples already entering the country informally.

Rainstorms flood city with boat crash and car losses

Four people were rescued after a 425 foot powerboat sank near Pier 6 in Baltimore's Inner Harbor when it flipped during the rain. The craft owner James Winn, 50, reported all aboard wore life preservers and were saved by marine units after about 15 minutes in the water. Winn's boat remained submerged in eight feet of water near Allied Chemical. A 38 foot cabin cruiser involved in the incident helped pull survivors. In Roland Park, a blue Chevette floated in two feet of water in a parking lot, later stuck between two trees. Police cited heavy rains for a separate accident in Green Valley injuring two Gaithersburg women, Kimberly Smith and Susan Simmons, treated and released at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Smith was charged with speed imprudence due to rain. Highs expected in the upper 80s with mostly sunny conditions today and tomorrow.
